I need food Pronto
"All is good in the world, the gym is done and I've got a healthy meal planned and there's nothing more I need to do this weekend before work tomorrow", I thought to myself.
"Clarke?", my housemate asked, "Can you smell gas...?"
"Hmm not particularly, how come?" I answered (my sense of smell isn't what it used to be for some reason).
Following this short exchange my housemate identified where the smell was coming from before immediately calling the local gas services to report the issue. Typical.
With the gas engineer arriving fairly promptly, our fears were confirmed. We had a gas leak. The gas in our home was subsequently turned off, leaving us with no usable oven, hot water or hob to cook with, all we were left with was a microwave.
The dream of lean beef cooked in coconut oil, tossed into a mixture of broccoli, spinach, garlic and herbs, vanished in an instant as the gas was turned firmly off for fear of using the hob blowing our house up.
I needed a back up plan, something healthy but also cheap.
I joked with one of my dear friends, who had the business idea to start delivering healthy food within 15 minutes for £8, that he should have his business started already.
"Actually, there's someone doing it, try Pronto...", he responded.
I eagerly googled Pronto and came across their website. £8? delivered? and healthy too? I was already sold...
Pronto - My Expectations
As someone wanting to make healthy choices, who wouldn't want the option of a healthy meal delivered for a reasonable price? It allows all the convenience of having a takeaway without the guilt that inevitably ensues from ordering a stuffed crust 15" "pizza supreme" and eating it all by yourself.
And no, that wasn't in your plan for a "sensible cheat meal to refuel" after an effective weight lifting session at the gym.
Eager to bypass the scenario above, I scanned through their menu options with all the excitement of a child surrounded by presents on Christmas morning.
I selected a healthy chicken burger with "guilt free goodness" as it's tagline and having the following description:
Grilled butterfly chicken breast, buffalo mozzarella, sun-blushed tomatoes and green pesto all piled high in a bloomer and served with a hearty spinach and sweet potato side salad.
Sounds delicious right? I popped in my credit card details, only to find I was a mere 400m outside of the free delivery area. Being a man who appreciates value, I naturally opted for the delivery location to be inside the free delivery area, ensuring the postcode that was given was sufficiently down the road.
Pronto - The Experience
As they wern't home yet. I went to go and wait at the specified area to collect my delivery, I was wearing my compression suit at the time to aid in recovery after a heavy weights session.
I'd hoped not to be the strangest man standing at the end of the road as their website and confirmation email stated my food would be delivered by an individual wearing a bow tie. Nice touch.
My confirmation had arrived at 18:10, meaning the driver should have arrived at 18:35. Standing on the street corner, I saw countless fast food delivery drivers scoot past on their mopeds, keeping an eagle eye out for one that may be dressed in a bow tie. Ideally, Pronto would have dropped me a text when my driver was nearby, or at least given me a reasonable time frame in which to expect my delivery man.
I received a call from the delivery man at 18:42, but who's counting right? With a rumbling belly I strolled across to meet the delivery man. Much to my disappointment, this was a normal delivery man, no fancy bow tie or a dinner jacket.
I asked about the outfit, or lack thereof, but was told they weren't wearing their bow ties due to the weather.
I strolled off back to my home to meet my other two flatmates who had just arrived, still looking like the most unusual man on the street at the time.
Food - Delivered Pronto (almost).
In terms of the main meal itself, it was delicious, coming in at a total of 734 calories, with 68 grams of carbohydrates, 52 grams of protein and 25 grams of fat (perfect for recovering after a heavy workout). This was a well balanced meal that, though slightly indulgent, is by no way comparable to the artery clogging, performance robbing burgers at your local fast food restaurant.
The burger did not arrive cold, but had lost an element of heat in transit, despite this it was still warm and tasty, with the green pesto drizzling over the chicken and sun blushed tomatoes as bites were taken.
My housemates were also very pleased with their meal, they'd ordered a roast chicken dinner which arrived hot enough they needed to blow it before eating (I expect this to be due to the plastic packaging their food arrived in compared to the brown paper box mine was transported in).
The ordering system was simple (even if I did have to go down the road to collect my order), the service was efficient and most important the food was delicious and great value.
As a very minor point, I was disappointed somewhat by the lack of bow tie from the delivery driver, it's not that I need my food to be delivered by people in bow ties, but by planting this expectation in my head, the lack of bow tie did damage the "deskaurant" concept that are trying to create.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my food, as did my housemates, it was great quality and much healthier than other options of fast food. For £8, including some greens, you can't ask for too much more than that!
Would I order from them again? Absolutely.
